If you know about his early life, then you will know something about what happens to the kids in my program. If you don't know who Ben Carson is, then this is your first homework assignment: Go look him up! Read his auto biography "Gifted Hands".
My name is John C. Forbes. I am the founder and chief instructor at the Renaissance Institute of Scholastic Excellence (RISE).
I have educated every kind of studentfrom preschooler to college grad, from the mildly retarded to the sublimely gifted, from the children of politicians to the children of the rich and famous.
At the Renaissance Institute of Scholastic excellence, no child can sit before me and be confused for long. My teaching skills have been honed in the fires of struggle and hard work.
I have students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade who could move right into a high school algebra class tomorrow and hold forth with even the Chinese students!
My preschoolers learn how to read, write, add, subtract and multiply before starting kindergarten or first grade.
The RISE Curriculum
The curriculum at RISE is built around a core of excellence that I have honed over the years. The focus of my program is on equipping my students with a body of skills and knowledge that will give them the aptitude to learn, and master, any academic challenge they meet in school and life.
Prep schools and colleges use aptitude tests to measure the aptitude or learning fitness of applicantsnot just specific academic knowledge. It tests a students ability to reason using math and verbal skills.
People who reason well learn quickly. They are more apt to master the world of school and career than those who dont reason well and have poor academic skills. Aptitude is defined as an ability to learn or develop proficiency in some particular area if appropriate education or training is provided.
High learning aptitude can be developed when children are masterfully trained and educated. My teaching strategy is designed to produce high learning aptitude in my students. I custom fit my teaching to fit the needs of my students. I dont care how far behind they are academically when they begin my program. They will become scholars under my instructionif their parents allow me the time required to bring them to permanent excellence.
Because I am a past master at what I do, my long term students reach high academic and intellectual levels and they develop the high aptitude needed to master any learning and career objective. My program serves human beings from age 3 to 103.
My curriculum is masterfully crafted, skillfully taught and thoroughly learned by my students. My students score very high on every aptitude test they need to take, which allows them to gain entry to any top school of their choice.
Math Instruction
Math instruction at RISE deploys through a seamless curriculum, expertly taught, that flows from the basics taught to 3 year-olds up to and through 2 semesters of college calculus. When a child begins instruction in my program in the early grades, most reach levels 3 to 6 grades ahead of their peers by 6th grade. By high school, they are prepared to master the most rigorous curriculum and when they are ready for college, they can pick and choose any college they want to attend and gain admissionoften on full scholarships. Mathematics mastery opens up all academic and career options for them.
Out of my program has come an architect, a math teacher, a science teacher, an advertising executive, a doctor, an electronics technician, to name some of the career paths my former students have taken. These career options would not have been open to them were it not for the high level of math instruction begun at RISE and the acquired aptitude for learning that evolved out of their math instruction.
Reading Instruction
My reading and reasoning curriculum also range from preschool through college level. The students of my most disciplined and intelligent parents soar years ahead of their peers. My students are taught how to read critically. They learn how to spot bias and other forms of written and verbal manipulation. I teach my students how to reason inferentially so that they can go deep and read between the lines. Children who learn to read well do more reading. The more disciplined and intelligent a parent is the less likely that parent is to let her kids vegetate on garbage. Good parents compel their children to become voracious readers and learners.
Writing Instruction
My writing program logically flows out of my reading and reasoning program. It is much easier to teach children the principles of effective writing if they are steeped in effective writing through reading lots of good books. The curriculum covers everything from basic pencil and paper penmanship exercises for preschoolers to writing essays and research papers for the college bound.
